Emirates A380 Gets Major Starlink Wi-Fi Upgrade With Free Faster Internet Onboard

The first Emirates A380 fitted with Starlink internet has now returned to Dubai, and the airline says passengers can expect a very different Wi-Fi experience in the sky from here on. For years, onboard internet on planes has been slow, patchy, and, honestly, a bit frustrating. Emirates was actually one of the earliest airlines to introduce internet access on commercial flights, but those older systems offered less than 1 Mbps across the entire aircraft.

Emirates A380s To Offer Faster Starlink Wi-Fi

The airline has installed three Starlink antennas on the aircraft, and Emirates says the upgrade boosts onboard bandwidth massively. Passengers flying at 40,000 feet should now be able to stream shows, browse properly, work online and even game during flights without the usual struggle of frozen screens or failed connections.

The first upgraded A380 completed installation and certification work in the UK before flying back to Dubai this week. More aircraft are expected to get the same setup during 2026 as Emirates speeds up the rollout across its fleet.

And unlike some airlines that limit better internet to premium cabins, Emirates says this service will be free for everyone onboard. Economy passengers included.

A Big Upgrade For The Giant A380

The Airbus A380 is already known for standing out. From the onboard lounge to the First Class shower spa, the aircraft has built a reputation for making long-haul travel feel a bit less exhausting.

But adding Starlink to the world’s largest passenger aircraft apparently came with its own technical headaches.

Because the A380 has two full decks and carries huge numbers of passengers, engineers had to build a setup that could handle heavier demand. Emirates said the aircraft now has extra wireless access points and a third antenna compared to its Boeing 777 aircraft.

The system can reportedly deliver more than 2 Gbps of bandwidth across the cabin.

More Aircraft Set For Installation

Emirates says installations will soon continue inside its Dubai engineering facilities to speed things up. So far, 25 of its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft already use Starlink internet.

The airline also said more than 650,000 passengers have already travelled on flights equipped with the newer system.

At the same time, Emirates keeps pushing ahead with wider cabin upgrades across its fleet, including refurbished interiors, updated entertainment systems and expanded Premium Economy cabins.
