High-speed trains are one of the most significant advances when it comes to travelling long distances. As an alternative to air travel, high-speed trains also offer comfort and seamless journeys, along with covering long distances in just a few hours. Many countries like Japan, France, China, and Germany, are constantly putting efforts into introducing some of high-speed trains.

The fastest trains across the world have significantly transformed rail journeys. While regular trains take hours to complete a trip, high-speed trains in different parts of the world cut down travel time and make the entire journey seamless.

1. Shanghai Maglev, China

In the top position, we have the Shanghai Maglev train operating in China. These trains run at 460 km/h. The train once hit 501 km/h during testing. What makes this train stand out from others is that it uses magnetic levitation to float above the track instead of wheels. Shanghai Maglev operates between Longyang Road Station and Shanghai Pudong Airport, covering a 30.5 km-long route.

2. CR Harmony, China

The Harmony series, also known as CR Harmony, was the first generation of high-speed trains in China. Once during testing, this train reached 486.1 km/h. Another model, CRH380D, hit 483 km/h, earning a spot among the highest ever speeds recorded for conventional trains, Railway Technology reported.

3. CR Fuxing, China

Another one of the highest-speed trains from China is the CR Fuxing. Unlike other models, Fuxing trains are fully developed with Chinese technology and operate at 350 km/h. It can carry more than 500 passengers. The train covers the distance between Beijing and Shanghai in less than five hours.

4. DB ICE (Intercity-Express), Germany

Germany’s Intercity-Express (ICE) trains are developed by Siemens and Bombardier. Along with running for Deutsche Bahn, one of the largest transport companies, it also serves international routes. The ICE 3 usually operates at 320 km/h, whereas Class 403, a version of the Intercity Express, can run up to 330 km/h to complete the journey and cover up the delays.

5. Train à Grande Vitesse, France

France’s Train à Grande Vitesse (TGV) is Europe’s high-speed rail. Since 1981, these trains have broken multiple records. In 2008, a modified TGV POS set a world record of 574.8 km/h that has not been broken by another train yet. For normal services, these trains run at 320 km/h, connecting French cities. It also connects neighbouring countries like Spain, Italy, Belgium, and Germany. 

6. Trenitalia Frecciarossa 1000, Italy

According to Business Insider, Italy’s Frecciarossa 1000, meaning “Red Arrow,” started its service in 2014. It connects cities like Turin, Milan, Florence, Rome, and Salerno. Along with fast journeys, these trains also ensure they provide a luxurious experience with the best interiors for the passengers.

7. JR Shinkansen, Japan

The JR Shinkansen in Japan, also known as the bullet train, is one of the well-known high-speed trains in the world. It was introduced in 1964 and connects Tokyo and Osaka. The latest models of these trains, the E5 and H5 series, operate at 320 km/h. These trains are developed in a way that makes them run smoothly even during the snow season.

8. Renfe AVE 103, Spain

Renfe AVE 103 is a Spanish train and is a member of the Siemens Velaro, a group of high-speed electric multiple-unit trains. In 1992, these trains used to operate the Madrid-Seville line but now connect most of Spain’s major cities. Operating at 310 km/h, it can carry 404 passengers.

9. Korail KTX-Sancheon, South Korea

With Korail KTX-Sancheon, South Korea entered the list of countries having one of the high-speed trains. These trains are entirely developed in Korea and run at a speed of 305 km/h and can carry up to 363 passengers.
