The new electric bus network runs along the Masar corridor, a vital four-kilometre route linking major transport hubs to areas close to Masjid Al Haram. This corridor carries huge volumes of pilgrims every day, especially during peak seasons as mentioned in a report by MSN.com.
By replacing diesel buses with fully electric vehicles, Saudi Arabia aims to cut congestion, lower emissions, and make travel more predictable. Dedicated lanes keep buses moving even when surrounding roads slow to a crawl. That alone changes everything.
What Makes The Masar BRT Different
The Masar BRT works more like a metro system, just on wheels. Stations are modern and clearly marked with simple boarding and stops spaced to reduce walking distance, which matters when temperatures rise. The route directly connects with the Haramain High-Speed Railway, creating a smoother link between long-distance travel and last-mile movement inside Mecca. This new introduction brings fewer transfers and less confusion.
Designed With Pilgrims In Mind
The buses themselves feel like a major step. Managed by Electromin, the fleet runs on an Intelligent Transport System.
Expect the experience to be comfortable with the provision of air conditioning, Wi-Fi and USB charging. Digital screens provide live updates in multiple languages.
In terms of accessibility, they have added a hydraulic “kneeling” system that allows level boarding. This makes the service easier for elderly pilgrims, wheelchair users, and families with strollers.

What This Means For Hajj And Umrah In 2026
During Hajj and Umrah, buses carry the bulk of pilgrim traffic between hotels, prayer areas, and transport hubs. Delays have long been part of the experience. The electric BRT aims to change that. Higher-capacity vehicles, predictable travel times, and dedicated lanes help reduce pressure on surrounding roads. Authorities also expect better crowd distribution, easing congestion near key access points to the Grand Mosque.
This new addition to the transport system sets the tone for what pilgrim transport will look like going forward. Smarter. Cleaner. Built around people, not just vehicles.
