Meghalaya, a mountain state in northeastern India, is famous for its lush landscapes, breathtaking waterfalls, and pristine rivers. The destination enjoys huge popularity among tourists, but there is going to be a major change soon. The state has now made an ILP-style registration mandatory for all tourists. Here’s what this means and what you need to know.
Meghalaya To Introduce ILP-Style Registration For All Tourists
According to India Today NE, Meghalaya is now preparing a mandatory tourist registration system modelled on the Inner Line Permit (ILP) process. The move is aimed at better visitor tracking, document checks, and stronger entry monitoring. Reportedly, this new rule will require all visitors entering the state to undergo verification before arrival.
Tourists will have to visit designated centres where officials will verify their identity, travel purpose, and supporting documents. The first such facility is being established at Umling in Ri-Bhoi district, with similar centres planned across Meghalaya, including Garo Hills.

Registration Centres Will Also Act As Tourist Facilitation Hubs
This registration system will not just maintain a comprehensive record of visitors but will also address concerns over illegal infiltration. Authorities will examine the documents of all visitors to verify their identity and ensure that foreign nationals have all the necessary travel papers. According to India Today NE, the system will operate in a similar manner to the ILP process followed in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Manipur.
The registration centres will also function as tourist facilitation hubs. Along with registration facilities, they will also offer basic amenities for visitors, including restaurants and other services. The authorities believe this new system will strengthen security measures and provide real-time data on tourist arrivals.
