Four SpiceJet ground crew members were physically abused by an Army officer at Srinagar Airport. The shocking incident occurred just because he was asked to pay additional fees for extra cabin baggage. Two employees were seriously injured after the attack, one with a broken jaw and another with a spinal fracture. The incident took place on July 26 and has raised major concerns about passenger behaviour and airport security.

The situation began like any routine check-in. The Army officer brought 16 kg of cabin baggage, more than twice the 7 kg permitted limit, to the SpiceJet boarding gate. The officer refused to pay when SpiceJet employees kindly told him about the excess weight.
Rather than cooperating, the officer became aggressive. According to the Money Control reports, he forcefully entered the aerobridge, the walkway that leads passengers to the aircraft, without completing the required boarding procedures. This was a clear violation of aviation security rules. The situation got worse when a CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) personnel stepped in and escorted the officer back to the boarding gate.
But instead of calming down, the officer launched a violent attack on the ground staff. According to a detailed statement from SpiceJet, the officer punched and kicked the staff repeatedly, used a queue stand (those metal poles with ropes used for lining up) as a weapon, hit one employee so hard that he collapsed unconscious on the floor, and kept hitting and kicking even after the staffer had fainted
He kicked another staff member in the face while they were trying to help their fallen colleague, causing bleeding from the nose and mouth. One of the employees suffered a fracture in the spine, and another had serious injuries to the jaw, Money Control reported.

No-Fly Ban Process Initiated
All four injured employees were immediately rushed to the hospital and are currently undergoing treatment for their injuries. SpiceJet has taken the matter very seriously. The Army officer has been placed on the no-fly list, which could prevent him from flying with any Indian airline going forward. They also notified the Ministry of Civil Aviation and filed a police complaint against him.
According to Money Control, the airline is calling this incident a “murderous assault.” It serves as a reminder that airline employees shouldn’t have to deal with physical violence while they’re just performing their duties. Regardless of rank or occupation, everyone must follow and abide by the rules and regulations of the airline industry.
Let’s hope that justice is served and steps are taken to ensure such incidents never happen again.
