Delaware, New York & New Jersey Recognise August 15 As ‘India Day’ In The US

Independence Day is just around the corner, and celebrations have already begun across cities in India. Security has been tightened, while decorations and cultural activities are already in progress. What’s most exciting is that not only India, but many states in the US are also joining the celebrations by recognising August 15 as “India Day.” Read to know more! 

US States Mark August 15 As ‘India Day’

In the latest announcement, Delaware has become the newest state to declare August 15 as “India Day.” As per India Today, Governor Matthew Meyer signed a proclamation recognising August 15. Moreover, Delaware’s announcement also highlights its diverse communities and cultures.

It recognises how the Indian-American community has helped shape the state through its work, leadership and service. The state is also honouring India’s rich and colourful culture. Recognising August 15, Delaware is also highlighting country’s languages, traditions, faiths and customs. It also marks the strong connection between these two countries.

Other States To Recognise Aug 15

A day before Delaware’s announcement, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill also made announcements recognising August 15, 2026, as “India Independence Day.”

India’s Independence Day is celebrated with great excitement across the US every year. The Indian Embassy, consulates and India’s mission to the UN host special flag-hoisting ceremonies. Indian-American and other diaspora communities also join in with parades, cultural programmes and other fun events.
