If you’re planning a trip to Thailand soon, you should know that the country has tightened its alcohol control laws and introduced a stricter drinking ban. Building on the long-standing ban on alcohol sales from 2 PM to 5 PM, anyone caught drinking outside the restricted hours can face hefty fines. Both tourists and locals are being urged to stay aware of the new rules to avoid penalties. Scroll down to know more about this.
Thailand Introduces Stricter Day Drinking Ban
According to The Economic Times, the drinking ban in Thailand now comes with heavier fines for anyone caught drinking or being served alcohol during restricted hours or in prohibited areas. Effective November 8, the updated Alcoholic Beverage Control Act extends enforcement to consumers, with fines starting at 10,000 baht (₹27,500).
It is to be noted that Thailand has a long-standing 2 PM to 5 PM and midnight to 11 AM alcohol sale ban. Since 1972, the law has forbidden most retail outlets and supermarkets from selling alcohol during restricted hours. Now, with the amended act, drinking alcohol outside the restricted hours can also result in fines. There are some exceptions, of course. Those with licensed entertainment venues, hotels, certified tourist establishments, and international airports can continue as before.
Here’s All You Need To Know About This
Under Thailand’s drinking ban and amended alcohol control laws, advertising rules have also been tightened. Companies are now allowed to share only factual content, and the use of celebrities, influencers, or public figures to promote alcohol is strictly prohibited.
The authorities say the changes are meant to curb the health and social risks of heavy drinking in Thailand. However, experts believe that this will severely impact tourism in the country. Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya are known for their nightlife and clubs, and these restrictions may dampen Thailand’s party scene.
