From Qatar’s national service programme and a milestone for Etihad Rail to Diwali celebrations in Dubai, here are five regional updates to know about. Oman has also shared an update on injured Indian seafarers, while Abu Dhabi is preparing for a major New Year’s Eve concert featuring Diljit Dosanjh.

1. Qatar Opens National Service Programme To Two More Resident Categories

Qatar has opened its national service programme to two additional categories of foreign residents: children of Qatari women and non-Qatari residents born in the country. The Ministry of Defence announced the change on June 9, 2026, and applicants must be at least 18, hold a valid Qatar residence permit and meet medical and conduct requirements. Selection also involves an admission interview. The programme may run for up to five years, with a monthly financial incentive of up to QAR 7,000. Those who complete the service may receive priority consideration for recruitment into the Qatar Armed Forces and permanent residency there.

2. Indian Ambassador Visits Injured Seafarers In Oman

India’s Ambassador to Oman, Prashant Pise, visited injured Indian seafarers receiving treatment at KIMS Hospital in Muscat following an attack on a commercial vessel. During the visit, he met the crew members and their families, and spoke with hospital officials about their condition, treatment and recovery. Separately, the Royal Air Force of Oman carried out a medical evacuation involving a crew member from an Indian vessel targeted in the Strait of Hormuz. The seafarer was transferred from Khasab Hospital in Musandam to Khoula Hospital in Muscat for specialised care. The developments highlight ongoing assistance for the injured crew as well.

3. Etihad Rail Sells 120,000 Tickets In First Month

Etihad Rail has sold 120,000 passenger tickets in the first 30 days since its passenger service officially launched on September 30, 2026. The network connects Abu Dhabi and Dubai with Al Dhaid and Fujairah, giving travellers another way to move between the emirates. The service also includes onward transport links, with a pedestrian bridge connecting Dubai’s Al Yalayis station to Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro station. In Abu Dhabi, shuttle buses connect the railway station with destinations including ADNOC headquarters, ADNEC, Reem Mall and Yas Island. Further stations are planned for Liwa, Madinat Zayed and Al Dhafra for passengers travelling nationwide.

4. Dubai Announces Diwali 2026 Events, Drone Shows & Dining Celebrations

Global Village will mark the occasion from November 6 to 10 with a 600-drone show, music, games and Indian food. At Souk Al Seef, Noor: Festival of Lights will run on November 7 and 8, with cultural performances and live music. Hotels and restaurants are also planning special menus, brunches and celebrations, including venues in Downtown Dubai and Jumeirah Lakes Towers.
