Fireworks, camel races and food stalls usually steal the show at the Sheikh Zayed Festival. This season, a quieter corner deserves your time. The festival returns to Abu Dhabi on 30 October 2026 and runs for 136 days, until 14 March 2027. Tucked into it is a pavilion that takes you back to a UAE before the skyscrapers.
Eleven Stops Through The UAE’s Timeline
The National Archives and Library has set up “Memory of the Nation” as a walk-through of eleven historical stations. You start in the days before oil, when pearl diving and sea trade kept families afloat. The story then moves to the discovery of oil, the birth of the Union and the way the young country built its place in the world. Education, scientific progress and national milestones fill the later stops.
Maps, Aerial Shots And Rare Objects
This is not a wall of text. Expect aerial photographs, old maps, documents and rare artefacts picked from the archive’s collection. Interactive displays show how the team restores, digitises and protects fragile photographs and papers. Digital media lets you explore stories at your own pace, and a few activities nudge visitors to think about their own part in keeping the nation’s memory alive.
Families Lent Their Own Treasures
Part of what makes this pavilion feel personal is who helped fill it. The archive thanked the Lest We Forget initiative, supported by the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation, along with the Marine Environment Authority and individuals who shared private collections. Director-General Dr Abdullah Majed Al Ali said the aim is to help younger Emiratis know their history and feel proud of it. The pavilion also makes the case that family collections and spoken memories matter as much as official records.

Why You Should Make Time For It
Festival days can blur into a haze of snacks and rides. Give this pavilion an unhurried visit and everything else you see, from traditional crafts to maritime heritage, gains context. The visual, hands-on format works well for kids too. The closing message sums it up: a nation’s memory is stitched together from thousands of photographs, records and stories.
