To climb Mount Everest in spring, climbers from across the world visit Nepal. But reaching the top is not guaranteed. It mostly depends on weather conditions and mountain safety. This year too, the conditions were difficult due to extreme ice and blockage on the route. However, now the route has finally been reopened. Read on to know more!
Mount Everest Reopens For Climbers
Nepali guides have recently reopened an important route on Mount Everest after it had been blocked for nearly two weeks. As per NDTV, the route was closed because a large piece of unstable glacier ice, called a serac, fell above the Khumbu Icefall. This made the area very dangerous and stopped climbers from moving through one of the key sections of the mountain.
To fix this, a team of 21 skilled climbers worked on the route. This team included eight special experts known as “icefall doctors.” Their job is to make the path safe by setting ropes and ladders through the shifting ice. They restarted their work last month to prepare the route for the busy spring climbing season.

Climbers Are Waiting To Start Their Journey
Climbers at Everest base camp are carefully watching the situation before starting their journey. According to NDTV, many of them are waiting because they have to cross the Khumbu Icefall. It is one of the most dangerous parts of Mount Everest.
Due to the delay in opening the route, some expedition leaders, including Lukas Furtenbach from Furtenbach Adventures, have decided to pause their teams. They are waiting for further safety updates from the icefall doctors’ committee before allowing climbers to move ahead.
This season, Nepal has issued more than 900 permits for climbing Himalayan peaks, and around 425 of them are for Mount Everest. Because of this, Everest base camp is very crowded, with over 1,000 climbers and support staff getting ready for their attempt to reach the summit.
