Recently, an Indian woman posted a video where she shared how her gold chain was snatched in broad daylight in Downtown Chicago, America, a place often considered safer than India. Chabi Gupta, a fashion influencer living in Chicago, goes by the username @chabigupta on Instagram. She is also one of Forbes’ Top 100 Digital Stars and has more than 20k followers. She recently shared a video revealing how someone attempted to snatch her gold chain in a crowded street in Downtown Chicago. Showing bruises on her neck, Chabi mentioned that she grabbed her chain in time, but a piece of it broke. She said, “Thank God I could save my locket, but the hook is gone,” showing the broken chain to her followers.

She then shared a clip of herself video-calling her mom in India. Her mother voiced her concern, saying this had never happened to her in Ranchi, Patna, or Bengaluru. But it happened in Chicago, a city often assumed to be safer simply because it is outside India. Chabi also shared that the street was crowded, and no one came to help. She also wrote, “For a second, I froze. Then it hit me how real this city can get. Not saying this to spread fear — just facts.”

How To Avoid These Incidents Abroad

Chabi Gupta then shared some safety tips for her followers. She wrote, “I love this city, but safety ain’t something we can sleep on. Be street smart. Be city smart. Stay safe, fam.” Here are the tips she recommended: 

  1. Keep your valuables safely tucked inside.
  2. Stay aware of your surroundings.
  3. Walk in groups to stay safe.

Many netizens came forward to voice their opinions. One wrote, “And they say that India is not safe.” Another added, “Conclusion: The US has a higher crime rate than India.” One user also said, “We should not wear a gold chain these days anywhere.”
