When it comes to tourism, factors like cost, infrastructure, and experience play a crucial role. Recently, Shashi Tharoor highlighted India’s tourism challenges, pointing out that a trip to Thailand is often cheaper than in India. Here’s why he said that!
Shashi Tharoor Says Thailand Is Cheaper Than India
Recently, in a chat with members of the Indian diaspora in Thailand, Shashi Tharoor highlighted India’s tourism challenge. He said that Thailand is usually cheaper for tourists compared to India, which he called “ironic.” He pointed out that Thailand has a higher per capita income than India, yet it still offers more affordable travel options. Hindustan Times reported that according to him, India should ideally be cheaper and more accessible for international tourists if it wants to grow its tourism industry.
Tharoor said that cost is just one part of the problem. According to him, India also needs to change how it promotes tourism and improve its overall strategy. He added that although the government spends money on tourism campaigns and marketing, these efforts are often not done properly. He also said that many officials do not have enough practical experience in promoting tourism, except for a few good examples.
How Do Tour And Travel Company Play A Crucial Role?
The private sector can also play a major role in promoting tourism. He believes tour operators and travel companies should not just focus on tourists coming to India, but also go abroad and actively promote India as a travel destination. He suggested that specially designed travel packages could help attract more international tourists in a better way.
As per Shashi Tharoor, there’s also a need for better infrastructure. He said the Indian government should focus on basic facilities in tourist areas, like better cleanliness, proper waste management, and more hygienic public spaces. He added that policies like tax benefits and cheaper travel options could also make India more attractive for both tourists and travel companies.
