Italy Makes Air Travel Easier For Pet Parents: Bigger Dogs Can Now Fly In The Cabin

Dogs Italy

Many people across the world love to travel with their pets instead of leaving them at home alone. While flying, they want equal comfort and freedom for their pets. Italy understands this and has decided to make air travel more pet-friendly. The country has now changed its air travel rules so that people can fly with their big dogs inside the cabin. Scroll down to know more details.

Italy Allows Big Dogs To Fly With Their Owners

Introducing a major change, Italy has allowed medium and large dogs to fly with their owners inside the cabin. Earlier, only small pets and guide dogs could fly in the cabin. The new rule raises the weight limit from 25 kg to 30 kg, allowing more dogs to travel alongside their owners. This change aims to support pet owners who struggled earlier because their big pets had to travel in the cargo hold or with separate arrangements. Now, larger breeds will get more comfort and safety because they will sit close to their owners, reported Travel and Tour World.

These rules are supported by the transport ministry and Italy’s aviation authority ENAC. The move is part of Italy’s larger mission to upgrade transport laws and make the country more modern and animal-friendly. The government wants to improve the overall travel experience for both locals and tourists who fly with their pets.

More About This New Rule

According to Travel and Tour World, under these new rules, up to six dogs can travel in one flight. Earlier, the maximum limit was just two. Airlines can create special pet zones inside the plane. These spaces will have proper seating arrangements for pets and their owners. At the same time, ENAC has also ordered airlines to keep pet-free zones for passengers who do not want dogs around them or who have allergies. This ensures comfort and balance for every passenger on board.

Italy has been working towards pet-friendly travel for some time now. In 2023, ITA Airways had already raised the pet weight limit for cabin travel from 8 kg to 10 kg on domestic flights. Italy also allowed an experimental flight in 2023 where two big dogs travelled inside the cabin without carriers. This experiment received a good response and became one of the reasons behind the current reform.
