Kerala Plans Tourism Makeover For Kollam With Floating Restaurant, Local Market & Culture Shows

Kollam Travel

Kollam, the ‘Cashew Capital of Kerala’, is a gateway known for its pristine beaches, backwaters and eco-tourism sites. Now, the Department of Tourism is all set to give Kollam a mega makeover to attract more visitors and make it one of the best travel destinations in India. Here’s what all is planned!

Kollam Could Soon Become A Premium Travel Destination

Kollam is considered an underrated gem in Kerala. Unlike heavily touristy places like Alappuzha and Munnar, this place offers a more authentic backwater experience, but without heavy crowds and commercialisation. But still, many people are not familiar with it. To boost visitor numbers, the Department of Tourism is planning big things. According to The Hindu, officials are planning a major upgrade to transform Kollam into a premium travel destination in India.

Tourism and Culture Minister P.C. Vishnunadh recently revealed during a high-level discussion that authorities are considering establishing international-standard entertainment facilities around Ashtamudi Lake. Keeping Gen Z and Gen Alpha in mind, the government is also planning modern gaming zones in the area. The main aim of the initiative is to encourage tourists to extend their stays in Kollam.

Floating Restaurant, Houseboat Cruises, Culture Shows & More

According to The Hindu, the initiative also plans to develop a dedicated market for local products. It is expected to elevate the living standards of the local community and give tourists something to shop for and take back home from Kollam. The construction phase of these modern facilities is also expected to generate employment opportunities.

Reportedly, a floating restaurant is also being planned on the backwaters, which will accommodate 100 people at a time. That’s not all. As part of this mega makeover plan, houseboat cruises through the backwaters, cultural programmes, water sports and guided tours into the mangrove forests are also being considered.
