Kerala’s Munnar May Introduce A Tourist Entry Fee From August; Check All Deets Here

Munnar in Kerala is considered one of the best hill stations in South India. The destination is known for its breathtaking mountain views, lush tea gardens, and pleasant cool climate. But travellers planning a vacation to this beautiful hill station might soon have to pay a tourist entry fee. Keep reading to know why this decision was taken.

Tourists Visiting Munnar May Soon Have To Pay An Entry Fee

According to Mathrubhumi, tourists travelling to Munnar, Kerala, will soon have to pay an entry fee. This decision was taken by the authorities to improve waste management and reduce traffic congestion in the hill station. The Munnar panchayat authorities have now started implementing procedures to introduce this system. It is expected to be introduced in August 2026.

The plan is to set up green checkposts at key entry points for fee collection. Under the proposal, small vehicles may be charged ₹30, while larger vehicles could be charged ₹100. Final rates will be decided after the authorities hold proper discussions regarding the change.

New Rule To Help Tackle Waste At The Hill Station

According to Mathrubhumi, the proposed locations for these green checkposts include Old Munnar on the Adimali road, near the police station on the Devikulam road, and the Periyavara junction on the Marayoor road. Visitors entering through these checkposts might also be given bags to store waste instead of discarding it in public places.

Tourists will hand over these waste bags at the checkposts while returning from Munnar. This is definitely a good way to tackle waste management in the hill station. It should be noted that around 2,000 vehicles enter Munnar daily on average, and the count increases to nearly 5,000 vehicles during peak season.

Many tourists dump large amounts of waste at several locations, which creates problems for authorities working on waste collection and disposal. This new rule will help cover the expenses involved in processing this waste.
