According to his social media post, Messi had already written his retirement message just two days after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the World Cup final. He chose to wait before making the decision public, taking time to reflect on his future with the national team.
In his emotional message, Messi admitted that the decision was painful but said he knew the time had come. He also reflected on how he had always given everything to the Argentina shirt and wanted to leave knowing he had made his country proud.
The loss of his father, Jorge, appeared to strengthen that decision. Messi had spoken about his father’s health during the World Cup and was visibly emotional at various points during the tournament. Jorge died in early August, and his passing reportedly left Messi more convinced than before that it was time to close this chapter.

Lionel Messi’s international career began in 2005, and over more than two decades, he went from being a young talent struggling under the weight of expectations to becoming the captain who delivered Argentina its biggest prize.

According to India Today, he leaves international football with 207 appearances and 125 goals, cementing his place as one of Argentina’s greatest-ever players.
For Messi, however, the numbers only tell part of the story. His international journey was filled with heartbreak, criticism and near misses before finally reaching the pinnacle with the 2022 World Cup triumph.
Now, after more than 20 years of giving everything to the Argentina shirt, Messi believes there is little more left to give.
His retirement may mark the end of his international football journey, but for a player whose career has been so closely intertwined with his family, the loss of his father has made this goodbye all the more emotional.
