7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Tohoku Region In Japan; Tsunami Warnings Issued For Coastal Areas

A strong earthquake of 7.4 magnitude struck northern Japan on Monday, April 20, 2026. The tremors have prompted authorities to issue tsunami warnings across coastal regions of the country. Emergency services have also been put on alert. Here’s everything you need to know about the situation.

Tsunami Warning Issued For Coastal Areas In Japan

According to The Japan News, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit the Tohoku region at 4:53 pm on Monday in Japan. The strong tremors forced authorities to issue tsunami warnings for Hokkaido, Iwate and Aomori prefectures, with waves predicted to reach up to three metres. The epicentre of the earthquake was off the Sanriku Coast. Authorities did not waste any time and issued emergency warnings for a tsunami just after the tremors. 

Authorities have urged residents to move to higher ground. Moreover, emergency services are on alert as officials assess potential damage and monitor the situation. According to Hindustan Times, tsunami waves were approaching coastal areas, and there is a chance they could strike repeatedly.

Waves May Strike Repeatedly; Residents Advised To Evacuate

According to Hindustan Times, authorities have advised people to evacuate without delay and remain in safe locations until warnings are lifted and the situation is declared safe. Tsunami waves could arrive earlier or later than forecast. They could also be higher than expected. People have been asked to stay away from coasts and river mouths, which could overflow.

As of now, there are no reports of injuries or major damage due to the earthquake in Japan. According to India TV, in 2011, Japan faced one of the most devastating disasters in its history. A magnitude 9.0 earthquake triggered massive tsunami waves, leaving around 18,500 people dead or missing. Reportedly, Japan experiences around 1,500 earthquakes every year. The country alone accounts for about 18% of earthquakes in the world, making it one if the most active regions on the earth.
