When travelling by train, one thing people don’t like to compromise on is cleanliness. It often decides whether a traveller’s journey is good or bad. Keeping this in mind, Indian Railways has taken a stricter step to improve hygiene across its network. They will now charge fines for littering. Read on to know how!
Indian Railways To Now Charge Fines For Littering
Indian Railways has launched a cleanliness drive to tackle littering on trains and at stations across the country. The message is clear: no more throwing waste around. According to Travel and Tour World, if you’re caught, you could be fined up to ₹500 on the spot. Ticket collectors and station staff have been told to stay alert and take strict action.
The drive began in April 2026 and is already in action on major routes, including the busy Delhi-Mumbai corridor and key stations across South India. And yes, it’s being taken seriously. In just one week, over 1,400 passengers were fined in the Eastern Railway zone alone.

What Else Is Railways Doing To Support Cleanliness?
To make this drive work better, Indian Railways has also levelled up. As per Travel and Tour World, more dustbins have been added at stations and inside trains, so passengers have fewer excuses to litter. You’ll now hear regular announcements and spot signboards reminding you to use them. There’s also a focus on tourists who may not know the rules. Messages in different languages are helping spread the word in a simple way.
That said, not everyone is fully convinced yet. Some passengers say dustbins are still missing in a few areas, which makes it hard to follow the rules. Others wonder if the fines will be applied fairly across all classes, including premium coaches.
Even with these concerns, many travellers and environmental groups are supporting the move. After all, a clean space makes any journey more comfortable.
