On Sunday morning, Udhna Railway Station in Gujarat’s Surat witnessed a heavy rush as thousands of passengers, mostly migrant workers, gathered to board trains at the start of summer vacations. After the heavy overcrowding, Indian Railways has released a statement, informing that the situation is under control. Read on to know more.

Stampede At Udhna Railway Station?

As per a report by the Indian Express, the overcrowding becomes unmanageable, leading the security personnel to resort to a lathi-charge to control the situation after many passengers breached barricades and broke queues to board trains to their home state, such as Bihar, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh. Following this, the Western Railway denied reports of a stampede at the railway station and requested the passengers to only rely on the verified information. The post read, “In light of misleading narratives being widely circulated regarding overcrowding at Udhna railway station and the alleged non-operation of special train services, Western Railway considers it necessary to place the verified factual position on record in the interest of public clarity.”

The official page also clarified the reason behind the viral video and wrote, “During the course of passenger movement for special train services, a brief disturbance occurred when a few unruly boys attempted to breach barricading arrangements. The situation was promptly brought under control by on-ground railway staff and police, ensuring no disruption to overall operations.”

Western Railways Says Situation “Under Control”

As per the news portal, Western Railways informed that at least six trains were scheduled to run to states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with stoppages in Udhna on Sunday. The waiting area and the platform had over 22,000 people who had spent Saturday night on the station premises to board trains.

Following the viral video mishap, Western Railways has been constantly posting real-time updates from the Udhna Railway Station on their official X account. The page also informed that the situation at the station is “well managed”. “The situation at Udhna Railway Station is normal & well-managed. On-ground conditions at Udhna Railway Station remain orderly, with effective crowd management in place. Passengers are advised to rely only on official updates and refrain from sharing unverified information,” the statement read.
