Mumbai is set to get three new bridges as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that the Sion, Vidyavihar and Goregaon-Mulund bridges will be inaugurated on Thursday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the projects virtually at 1 pm, in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde will preside over the ceremony, with live broadcasts planned at all three locations. The bridges are expected to improve east-west connectivity, reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion across the city. Scroll down to know more.

Mumbai’s Sion And Vidyavihar Bridges To Boost Connectivity

According to reports by Mid-Day, the rebuilt Sion railway flyover replaces a 112-year-old structure that was declared unsafe. It connects Dharavi, Bandra, the Bandra-Kurla Complex and Kurla on the western side with Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road and the Eastern Express Highway on the eastern side. The reconstruction was also necessary to make space for the proposed fifth and sixth railway lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla. Central Railway rebuilt the main bridge, while the BMC renovated and strengthened the approach roads.

The new structure features two steel girders, each weighing 496 tonnes and measuring 54.5 metres long. Originally scheduled for completion in February 2027, the project was completed four months ahead of schedule. The Vidyavihar flyover will connect Ramchandra Chemburkar Road in the east with Lal Bahadur Shastri Road in the west. According to the BMC, it could cut travel time between the two sides from around 30 minutes to 10 minutes and ease congestion near Ghatkopar railway station.

The 650-metre project includes a section over the railway tracks and approach roads on both sides. Connections to the station platforms have also been provided.

Goregaon-Mulund Flyover To Reduce Traffic

The 1.26-km Goregaon flyover is part of the larger Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project, which aims to improve connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs. Located near Hotel Ratnagiri in Goregaon East, the flyover has three lanes in each direction and extends from General Arun Kumar Vaidya Marg to Santosh Nagar on Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari Road.

The BMC expects it to ease congestion around Dindoshi Court, the Hotel Ratnagiri junction and the Walbhat River junction. The flyover uses precast concrete segments and a curved steel structure to accommodate the junction’s layout. It will form part of the wider GMLR corridor, which also includes planned twin tunnels intended to improve travel between the eastern and western suburbs.
