According to The Economic Times, the earthquake hit the Jalalabad area around midnight local time. Afghanistan is nestled in a seismically active zone. The Hindu Kush mountain range, which is saturated near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonics, is highly prone to earthquakes. Over the years, frequent quakes in the region have caused severe damage and loss of life.

Many people took to social media to share visuals of the earthquake and its aftermath in Afghanistan. Some videos showed ceiling fans shaking vigorously due to the tremors. Others showed their devastating impact, especially in Kunar.

Rescue teams have been working in several districts of Afghanistan, and hundreds of people were taken to hospitals for immediate medical assistance. While the exact number of casualties and injuries hasn’t been confirmed yet, many media reports suggest that the number has reached hundreds.
