Japan is undoubtedly living in 2050! We normally use a microwave to warm our food at home, but while travelling, that option becomes impossible. But did you know that Japan has self-heating bento boxes on trains, which need absolutely no fire or electricity to warm the food? Curious to know how? Scroll down now.
Japan Has A Self-Heating Bento Box
Before getting into the details, you should know what a Japanese bento box is. It is a packed meal in a multi-compartment box. Bento boxes have been a part of Japanese culture for schoolchildren and people who go to work. These packed lunch boxes usually contain rice, noodles, meat, fruits and side dishes. Recently, a travel vlogger, Brent Timm, on Instagram (@brenttimmtravel) uploaded a video of self-heating bento boxes while travelling on a train in Japan. And honestly, we were impressed.
Brent starts the video saying, “Japan is truly living in the future.” He explains that he is travelling on a bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka and is about to eat something unique. Brent then points to a box called “Eki Bento”, which means “station boxed meal”, meant to be eaten on the train.
He tells his followers that this box is unlike any other bento box in Japan. It is an “Atsu Atsu Bento” or a “hot hot meal”. This box comes with a string attached. If you pull that string, the water present inside the packaging enters the heating element at the base of the box. It then creates an exothermic reaction to heat up the food. No microwave, no stove; just warm and delicious food.

The Box Heats Up In Minutes
He continues telling his followers that it takes just five minutes for the box to heat up. He also says you can hear sizzling sounds coming from the box. Brent opens his bento and reveals hot, steaming food, and we are definitely stunned. The technology is amazing.
The food inside the box is a typical Japanese meal. There is rice, meat, noodles and vegetables like potatoes, green beans, carrots and more. The travel vlogger also reveals that he got the box for around 1,500 yen (₹854 approx.) Naturally, netizens were stunned by this futuristic Japanese technology. One wrote, “Looks cool.” Another commented, “I want to try it.”
