Shubhanshu Shukla, Group Captain in the Indian Air Force (IAF) and an astronaut with the Indian Space Research Organisation, recently shared how his crewmates baked a cake aboard the International Space Station using just a few humble ingredients. And yes, we are impressed because the cake made in space looks delicious.
Shubhanshu Shukla Shares How A Cake Was Baked In Space
India’s first astronaut to be part of a commercial mission to the International Space Station, Shubhanshu Shukla, shared on his official X account that he possesses many admirable qualities, but baking, whether on Earth or in orbit, is not one of them. Recently, while he was aboard the International Space Station, his crewmates, who were far more skilled in baking, prepared a real cake using real ingredients.
Shubhanshu shared how, during one evening in their tightly packed schedule, they gathered for a small celebration and decided to bake a cake using humble ingredients like bread, condensed milk, dried fruits and a “touch of jam”. He shared an image of the cake floating on the ISS and wrote, “I can say without hesitation that it was the finest “space cake” I’ve ever had, and perhaps the most memorable.”

Baking In Space Can Be Quite Challenging
This sounds amazing, right? Who would have thought that astronauts aboard the International Space Station not just work hard but also share light moments like these. A cake baked in space must have tasted “out of this world”.
Shubhanshu Shukla also shared how moments like these are precious for them. He added, “In between experiments and responsibilities, we carved out time to come together, astronauts from different corners of the world, sharing food, laughter, and stories while orbiting Earth at 7.6 kilometres per second. Up there, looking down at our planet without borders, it becomes beautifully clear: whatever flags we carry, we are, all of us, citizens of Earth.”
Baking in space is not as easy as it sounds. Ingredients float, which makes mixing difficult. Without gravity, heat does not circulate properly, and there are many other challenges, too. But still, these astronauts find ways to experiment with food in space.
