But authorities are now planning to add another requirement to the list for visitors. According to Times Now, Thailand is considering making health insurance mandatory for foreign tourists. Reportedly, the proposal is under discussion and may soon come into effect.

Authorities are introducing this rule to tackle unpaid medical bills and to ensure better care for tourists. Many Thai hospitals, especially in Bangkok and Phuket, have reported cases where international visitors receive treatment but are unable or unwilling to pay the bills. These incidents are becoming a financial burden on healthcare providers, pushing the government to explore new rules.

What This Rule Could Mean For Travellers

According to Times Now, if this rule is implemented, visitors may need to show proof of valid health insurance that covers medical expenses during their stay in Thailand. The details about minimum coverage and approved providers are still unclear. However, the insurance may need to include hospitalisation, emergency care and COVID-like contingencies, if required.

According to NDTV, the policy is still under review. Authorities are evaluating whether insurance should be compulsory for all tourists, including workers and short-term cross-border visitors. So, it is clear that if this plan is approved, tourists planning a trip to Thailand will need to get health insurance before entering the country.
