The Western Ghats have once again turned into a lush green paradise, making the Mumbai-Pune route one of India’s most picturesque monsoon journeys. And there’s probably no better way to experience it than travelling on the iconic Deccan Queen, India’s only train with a dedicated dining car offering table service. Want to know more about it? Read on.
India’s Only Train With Dining Car Service
As per a report by News18, the Deccan Queen completed 96 years of service on June 1 and is now entering its 97th year. The train has been a part of Indian railway history since 1930 and runs between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Pune. The train is popularly known as the Queen of the Deccan.
What truly sets it apart is its vintage-style dining car experience. Unlike other trains, where meals are served at your seat, travellers here can walk into a restaurant-style coach, sit at tables and relish their meals. The best part? Journey in this train during the monsoon season offers a view of the rain-soaked Western Ghats.

Earlier this year, Central Railway renovated the historic dining coach, providing it with a modern update while keeping its heritage charm. The updated space now features comfortable seating, polished interiors, warm lighting and beautiful Warli artwork that pays tribute to Maharashtra’s heritage. Some architectural elements even draw inspiration from iconic European luxury trains like the Orient Express.
How Does The Monsoon Season Make This Journey Special?
The monsoon makes the journey even more enchanted. As the train passes through the Bhor Ghat, an area between Karjat and Lonavala, travellers are treated to breathtaking views of waterfalls cascading down rocky cliffs, emerald-green valleys and clouds drifting across the Sahyadris.
The experience is enhanced further with the addition of a Vistadome coach, which offers large panoramic windows and uninterrupted views of the changing landscape.
Over the decades, the Deccan Queen has introduced several railway firsts, from early electric traction to vestibule coaches and a ladies-only compartment. Yet, its dining car remains its biggest draw, and it’s the only train offering that service.
