To protect the city’s heritage and beauty, Venice, Italy has rolled out new rules under which violators can be fined with penalties reaching up to ₹50,000. As per a report by Times Now, this move aims to curb bad behaviour, maintain urban cleanliness and promote public safety.

This step also comes in response to increasing complaints from residents about disruptive tourist conduct. Venice, known for its gondola rides and romantic canals, is one of the most visited destinations in the world. While tourism brings an economic boost, locals complain that it is becoming harder to cope with visitors who misbehave in public, like swimming in canals or drinking alcohol near monuments. Keeping all these in mind, the Venice City Council Municipal Police have now published a list of unacceptable behaviours on its official website.

Fines Tourists Can Face

As per the same report, tourists can be penalised for several infractions. These include:

  • Consuming food or drink while sitting on the ground near monuments: €100 to €200 (₹10,193 to ₹20,387 approx.)
  • Bathing, diving or swimming in the canals: €350 (₹35,677 approx.)
  • Littering or dumping trash in public areas: €350 (₹35,677 approx.)
  • Walking around bare-chested or in swimwear: €250 (₹25,496 approx.)

These newly introduced fines are also part of a broader European trend. Several destinations have started cracking down on unruly tourist behaviour during peak seasons. Authorities believe such measures are essential to protect local communities and maintain the sanctity of public spaces of cultural value.

Venice isn’t alone in enforcing strict regulations. Popular destinations such as Portugal and Spain have also introduced new rules. For instance, in Portugal’s Albufeira, wearing swimwear off the beach can attract a fine of up to €1,520 (₹1.5 lakh approx.). Similarly, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, tourists caught drinking in public can face penalties of up to €3,000 (₹3 lakh approx.).
