As it happens, Suhail Star has a deep historical significance. For centuries, Arabs across the region have believed that it marks a change in the weather. The appearance of the star seems to coincide with the decline in temperatures, owing to the decrease in the intensity of the sun. Thereby offers milder weather, making people breathe easier.

How Is the Star Recognised?

For those who are wondering, Canopus is recognised as a giant yellow white star. It is in the constellation Carina and about 313 light-years from Earth. In fact, this is visible in the South of latitude 33° North. It’s visible across Central and Southern Arabia, and even parts of North Africa. However, the star never clears the horizon and remains invisible throughout the year in Northern Arabia and the Levant.
