Do you step out for work feeling confident and put-together in the morning, only to feel like it all falls apart by evening? Well, the internet seems to have a theory for that! According to the viral ‘office air’ theory, the environment in your workplace, especially the air, could be affecting your hair, skin, and even your overall mood. Here’s what it’s all about.
What Exactly Does ‘Office Air’ Theory Suggest?
A year or two ago, social media was flooded with the “office air” or “office-air glow-down” theory. Now, according to India Today, the viral trend is making a comeback online. The concept first gained attention when digital creator Noa Donlan began documenting it through videos on Instagram and TikTok.
Her videos, which racked up millions of views, quickly gained traction, with many people agreeing with her observations. She noted that despite feeling “put together” in the morning, by evening her hair would turn greasy and flat, while her skin felt noticeably dry. Many found her experience highly relatable, with Donlan even joking that she feels like she has aged by 10 years by the end of the day.

All You Need To Know About This
While talking to India Today, cosmetic dermatologist Dr Ameesha Mahajan shared that there might be a possibility that the ‘office air’ theory is actually credible. She explained that office spaces typically have air conditioning systems with low humidity levels. When the skin is exposed to such conditions, it experiences increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
As a result, the skin can feel tight, dry, and dull, with a weakened barrier and greater sensitivity. This can lead to skin issues like eczema or irritation. When it comes to hair, she noted that the scalp often reacts to dryness by producing excess oil, which can leave it looking greasy by the end of the day.

Looks like it’s not just office culture—even the air could be responsible for your glow-down (kidding, of course!).
