During an interview with Galatta Plus, the actress opened up about the story behind the name and revealed how it is connected to her battle with myositis.

When the interviewer asked Samantha Ruth Prabhu why she named her cat ‘Gelato‘, the actress burst into laughter. Calling it an interesting question, she went on to reveal the deeply personal story behind the name. Samantha shared that during her nearly two-year break from films while battling myositis, a rare autoimmune condition, she had to follow strict dietary restrictions.

Reflecting on that phase of her life, Samantha revealed that food became a major concern and ‘trigger’ during her recovery. She explained that certain foods could aggravate her autoimmune condition, forcing her to follow a highly restricted and bland diet.

For nearly two years, she ate the same meals every day. Eventually, she was allowed to introduce a special sugar-free and dairy-free gelato into her diet, which became something she eagerly anticipated each week. Because the treat held such significance during a challenging period in her life, she decided to name her cat Gelato when she eventually adopted one.

Her Battle With Myositis

The actress also revealed that her relationship with food has improved now. “I’m in a good place where I can eat comfortably. Not excessively, but eat. I’m always asked, why did you lose so much weight? People never really know what’s going on with someone. It’s not like I don’t want to eat, I can’t eat,” she added.

Meanwhile, reports circulating online claim that Samantha Ruth Prabhu is expecting her first child with husband Raj Nidimoru. According to these reports, the couple is set to welcome their baby by the end of 2026. Despite the lack of an official statement, the rumoured news has already sparked a wave of congratulatory messages from fans and members of the entertainment industry.
