All your travel plans can be disrupted when the flight you are about to take gets delayed or cancelled. Now, this is exactly what passengers across the UK are facing after an air traffic control system problem disrupted flights at several airports. 

How Many Flights Are Cancelled In The UK?

In the UK, more than 1,000 flights were cancelled, leaving passengers stranded at airports. The flights were cancelled because of an issue with the flight processing system of Britain’s National Air Traffic Services (NATS). Though the problem was fixed by the evening, its impact was seen for hours.

The disruption affected flight operations across 15 airports. These airports are:

  • London Heathrow
  • London Gatwick
  • London Stansted
  • London City
  • Manchester
  • Birmingham
  • Bristol
  • East Midlands
  • Edinburgh
  • Aberdeen
  • Glasgow
  • Luton

As per NDTV report, at London Heathrow, departures resumed, but the airport stopped arrivals for the rest of the night. At Gatwick Airport, many passengers complained about a lack of response from airlines. British Airways cancelled or changed the routes of more than 100 flights. Ryanair said the disruption affected over 65,000 passengers and forced it to cancel more than 50 flights.

Airlines Issue Advisories For The UK Passengers

As many flights are getting cancelled and delayed, Air India has issued an advisory for passengers. The airline warned that several of its flights have been delayed, cancelled or diverted because of a technical fault at the UK’s air traffic control provider, NATS. Air India has asked passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. The airline said it is closely monitoring the situation and working to reduce the impact on travellers.

British Airways also issued an advisory and said that passengers whose flights were cancelled can visit its website and check the best alternatives offered by the airline. The airline also said that passengers who no longer wish to travel on September 9 can move their flight for free until September 11.
