There’s A 24-Hr Restaurant In Mumbai With A Full Cassette Wall That’s Every Retro Head & ‘90s Kids’ Dream

Mumbai restaurants are an aesthete’s dream playground. With so many ‘gram-worthy nooks and crannies, it is sometimes difficult to remember the interiors as pretty much every place follows the same playbook (or so it seems!). The couch colours will look familiar, the lamp game is same-same-but-different, the crockery has a homogenous feel, and so on. So how do restaurants stand out from the crowd? Of course, the quality of food and service is the right answer. But, I am talking about a restaurant’s recall value. So, how? A simple answer: incorporate an eye-catching element. And, there is a restaurant in Mumbai, Moxy Kitchen, where a full-fledged cassette wall grabs your attention. As it did mine!

Old School Energy And Vibes At Moxy Kitchen

Moxy Mumbai Andheri West is inching towards its first anniversary this August and I had the chance to preview the hotel before it opened its doors back in 2024. During my walkthrough and tasting of a sample menu at Moxy Kitchen (which was not open to the public back then), I was fascinated by one element in particular — its cassette wall. The whole space is vibrant, full of colours and artwork, but it is that wall that I still remember. See, recall value!

Placed very strategically, the wall houses cassettes on two sides of it. While I waited for the food to arrive, I started reading out names. Right from Pardes to some Bhajans, they stocked it all. Retro vibes were truly vibing!

Petition To Bring Back The Mixtapes Era Please!

Ask boomers or millennials and they will tell you all kisse and kahaaniyan of the mixtape era that is so close to their hearts. At Moxy Kitchen, the cassette wall is a nostalgic nod to the golden days. On a certain wall in the private dining area, which is called Boom Box, you will find, “Play, Pause, Stop, Forward and Rewind” wall signage. That’s giving old-school energy and I am game for it.

Moxy Mumbai’s General Manager, Sharad Singh AKA Captain says, “Inspired by the golden age of mixtapes, Moxy Kitchen brings retro vibes to life with its signature cassette wall — a nostalgic nod to the days of Play, Pause, Stop, Forward, and Rewind. Designed to feel like a walk into a recording studio, every detail here plays to the beat of the past. Our playful PDR, aptly named the Boom Box, echoes this rhythm with bold cassette icons and old-school energy. It’s more than dining – it’s a throwback you can taste, hear, and feel.”

Okay, So What’s On The Moxy Kitchen Menu?

Bambiya! Okay, not entirely. But the dishes do have a delightful fusion and at its core represent Mumbai and desi flavours. Breakfast options include Swadeshi Pancakes (dosas), Flatbread Expected (Parathas), staples like Waffles, eggs (your preferred style) and more. They have fresh juices, shorbas, and soups (do try their creme mushroom soup) as well.

You have to try their naans, as they are very “passionate” about it. I tried their Dhungar Murgh Tikka and Khandeshi Mutton Sukha. Both, are very good and come with a Mumbai-ya surprise on top. Their Crawford Cutlet, which is tawa aloo cutlet served with mint chutney, tamarind chutney and nylon sev is crispy and good. And, I loved their Irani Chicken Farcha; it was yummy.

I do recommend their Salli Boti; Birds Eye Chilli Chicken with Edamame Fried Rice; and Tender Lamb, Tambda Rassa with Indrayani Rice. For desserts, gobble up their The Bombay Emotions and Andheri Cha Khaja. It is not just playful names, but also playful touches and combinations. All, with dollops of nostalgia!

Make your way to Moxy Kitchen to invoke nostalgia in every bite and every sight! And, don’t forget to snap a pic in front of the cassette wall.

P.S. Don’t @ me if you don’t know what a cassette is. Take Google Baba or GPT aunty’s help, please!
