UAE Announces Initiative To Preserve Nation’s Modern Architecture; Here’s More About This

The United Arab Emirates has seen some major transformative developments, especially in terms of the country’s modern architecture. And now, it has become absolutely important to preserve these significant examples from the post-1960s that have pushed the nation towards development. So, the UAE’s Ministry of Culture and Youth has launched a project for preserving the modern architecture of the nation.

In a report by the National News, it was revealed that the UAE’s Ministry of Culture and Youth has launched a special initiative, which will not only recognise but also preserve the nation’s modern architecture. So, called the Modern Architectural Heritage of the UAE, this initiative shines the spotlight on some of the most iconic architectural examples in the UAE.

At this point, it should be noted that this development comes after recently the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi announced that 64 buildings and heritage sites in the capital will come under its protection. In case you weren’t aware, this is a modern heritage conservation initiative, which aims to prioritise these heritage sites, rehabilitation, and maintenance.

What Buildings Come Under This Project?

Under the Modern Architectural Heritage of the UAE project, the aim is to encourage research, documentation, preservation, and conservation efforts. According to its video on Instagram, the ministry has listed several sites that will be included in this preservation project. These include:

  • Abu Dhabi’s Bus Terminal and National Theatre
  • Dubai World Trade Centre and Deira Clocktower
  • Dubai World Trade Centre and Deira Clocktower
  • The Flying Saucer and Al-Qasimiyah School in Sharjah
  • Fujairah Trade Centre and International Airport
  • Ajman’s Independent Studios and Clock Square
  • Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium and Saqr Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah
  • Umm Al Quwain’s Al Arabi Cultural Sports Club

So, segregating such eras, namely the post-1960s and post-1990s, it is easier to define the language and the direction taken by the urban landscape of the region.
