As revealed in a report by the Khaleej Times, the UAE plans to add a geographical indication system for indigenous products. These will be for the products with any characteristics that originate from a specific geographical region of the nation. The aim is to take these products to a global level as they will boast a certified geographical indication. So, this means that those products, which have the certification, will be tagged and companies will be able to even raise the price due to the unique feature that they enjoy.

For those who are still wondering, geographical indication is basically a name or assigned, which is generally used on a product. This correspondence them to a particular geographical location or the origin can be even a town or a region.

These certifications are issued because, generally, a product enjoys a good reputation due to its geographical origin, it may possess certain qualities, or might even be procured through traditional methods.

For the first phase of this process, the Ministry of Economy has selected four products. These are as follows:

Honey – Hatta
Ceramics – Ras Al Khaimah
Dabbas dates – Al Dhafra region
Traditional palm frond products – these are crafted across emirates

In the same breath, it’s important to note that currently, 25 additional products are being reviewed. These include 13 food items and 12 handicraft products as well. So, by the end of the year, the number of products which will be covered by the service is expected to be six.

However, this is a long process as once the request for GI certificate is issued, a lot of research goes into the product before it is stamped with this recognition. It must be ensured that the product is indeed indigenous.
