What is the reason behind these mobile-run application riders and workers calling a mass strike? Well, they have some demands regarding their safety and others which they wish the government to fulfil.

According to the Central Government’s Social Security Code 2020, they urged that the central government swiftly enact the Gig Workers Registration and Welfare Act in Maharashtra. The businesses allegedly exploit the employees. They have pushed for the enactment of legislation to safeguard them from exploitation

In addition, the Supreme Court ordered that the Maharashtra government pass the Cab Aggregator Act as soon as possible.

This bandh on October 25 is organised by ‘Indian Gig Workers Front’s Joint Action Committee. On Wednesday, a symbolic bandh will be held in order to ensure that both bills are approved during the ensuing winter session. (As per Pune Pulse)

Recent Strike In Bengaluru

On October 9, it was reported that Swiggy riders in Mumbai had started a “indefinite strike” to seek a higher income and improved working conditions. Swiggy is a Bengaluru-based food delivery aggregator. To raise awareness of their demands, Swiggy employees participated in bike rallies and shared videos of themselves holding signs to social media.

The reports state that since they started their strike on October 8, it affected Swiggy’s operations in the Mumbai region. Many online customers lamented the inability to order meals or goods from the merchant using the Instamart app.

The protesting motorcycle riders may be heard asking for greater compensation in certain videos. After working for the company for almost 8 years, a worker said in an interview with the local news outlet that they are facing a form of relegation since their income is decreasing.
