Udaipur May Soon Be India’s First Wetland City. Here’s All You Need To Know

Udaipur is home to mesmerising surroundings, lakes, forts, palaces, establishments sparking royalty, historical significance, and so much more. Visiting this Rajasthani city is always such a splendid experience as it offers the best of both worlds; the blend of rich culture and history with modernity. Now, the White City is running to clinch the recognition of the first-ever Wetland City of India.

Udaipur; The City Of Lakes!

The Rajasthan government is currently taking a lot of steps and actions to help Udaipur become the first wetland city in our country. If you have been to Udaipur, you surely have seen so many lakes during your trip. There’s a reason why this Rajasthan city is known as the City of Lakes. There are many popular lakes that are also massive tourist attractions such as Lake Pichola, Lake Fateh Sagar, Lake Doodh Talai, Lake Rang Sagar, and Lake Swaroop Sagar.

Different departments such as the tourism departments and self-government departments largely manage the famous lakes and wetlands of the city of lakes. The Environment and Forest Department has selected Udaipur according to the Ramsar Convention of International Importance, as stated in a report by The Times of India. The city is a part of the central government’s restoration project of the National Lakes Conservation Plan. The concerned departments are now passing the city nomination to the Ramsar Convention for approval.

Another Indian City Is On The Run As Well

In India, Udaipur and Bhopal are running to get the incredible recognition of the first wetland city of India. There are some significance and criteria of this tag and all these can help a city to win the recognition. The best part is that Udaipur has all that is needed to become a wetland city. The TOI report stated that the criteria for an internationally recognised wetland are to have a special or uncommon wetland in the proper biogeographic area. Not just the proper position, it also needs to be in support of endangered and vulnerable species.

Right now, the world is home to 42 wetland cities. Will Udaipur become the 43rd wetland city globally and the first in India?
