UK Celebrity Gets Arrested For Wearing Bikini In Maldives

Many of us know that the Maldives is a gorgeous beach destination and is definitely on the list of water babies out there. But what many of us don’t know is that the Maldives is an Islamic country which has strict rules and regulations especially regarding dress code, violation of which can lead to one paying heavy fines or even getting arrested. A celebrity from the UK, Cecilia Jastrzembska was recently arrested in the Maldives for wearing a bikini on a beach at the Maafushi island in Kaafu Atoll.  She is a travel blogger, who is a former First Dates star and also appeared on Ninja Warrior UK. A video went viral where the Maldivian police were seen struggling to handcuff her.

Cecilia was arrested by the police for wearing a bikini and she was seen screaming at the police” You are assaulting me”. The police were struggling to handcuff her and another man was trying to cover her up with a towel. She was later taken away from the beach region. When the video went viral on the internet, many people came out in support of the woman and criticized the Maldivian police for manhandling her. Some people on social media even said she was being harassed by the public. Local media stated that the woman was arrested on Friday at 5 pm in the evening. Police officers revealed that the woman was intoxicated. She was held for around an hour and a half, and she later flew back to the UK in less than 24 hours of touring the Maldives.

 

Maldives Police Service Commissioner, Mohamed Hameed, apologetically stated that the incident in Maafushi in which his team of officers restrained a female tourist, was badly handled. He apologized to the tourist and public and stated that he would be working on professionalizing the police service, and investigating this matter further.

The woman from the UK was arrested at Maafushi in the Maldives. This is a significant luxury tourist destination which is famous amongst beach lovers across the world. But wearing bikinis in the local islands of the capital city of Malé, is strictly prohibited. The UK government has also advised tourists travelling to the Maldives to dress in a manner that is sensitive to the locals when visiting non-resort islands. Tourists can dress as they want only in local resorts or private islands of Maldives. However, nudism or topless sunbathing is not allowed anywhere on the island even in private island resorts.
