According to trade minister Kemi Badenoch, as part of negotiations for a free trade agreement with India, Britain will talk about short-term business visas. However, any agreement would not guarantee greater immigration obligations or give Indian workers access to the British labour market.

In January of last year, Britain and India began trade negotiations. Moreover, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has emphasised that he will not compromise quality for speed in those talks.

Suella Braverman, the interior minister, created controversy last year. She made remarks regarding the potential influence of Indian immigrants on trade negotiations. She expressed concern about any open borders migration policy with India as well as about people who overstay their visas.

In a letter to legislators that was published on Thursday, she stated that an FTA with India will not contain commitments on immigration or provide access to the UK domestic labour market.

Additionally, no agreement will be reached on anything that undermines the fundamentals or operation of the UK’s points-based immigration system, or that undermines the UK’s capacity to control its own border. She went on to say that business mobility, which would facilitate highly trained people providing services in one other’s markets temporarily, will be a topic of discussion during the discussions.
