His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai, has asked citizens and residents to raise the UAE flag. Yes, he has asked to raise these flags across homes, institutions, and buildings, underscoring the national unity after the recent crisis. Taking to X, here’s what he posted.

Taking to X, Sheikh Mohammed posted that the UAE has entered the recent period with unity. Not to mention, he further said how it has emerged even more united, loyal and cohesive as citizens and residents stood together under the flag of the nation. So people have been urged to host the nation’s flag, which is the symbol of strength and pride, as an expression of belonging and solidarity. He called for the flag to be raised high above every home and building as a sign of loyalty and unity.

Important Rules And Guidelines For Raising The Flag

However, before you go ahead raising the UAE flag, there are some important rules and guidelines one must follow. There are also some important things that one must know, especially when it comes to flag raising etiquettes. These etiquettes have been outlined in the UAE UAE Ministry of Cabinet Affairs’ guidelines and it tells how the flag must always be treated with respect and should be displayed correctly and it should be according to the national protocol. As revealed in a report of the Gulf News, any act of disrespect shown towards the national flag is considered a serious offence under the laws of the UAE and can carry penalties of imprisonment that could be anywhere from 10 to 25 years and fines of no less than AED500,000.

Guidelines For Flag Care & Display

So how should one display and care for the flag?

  • Well, the flag must be kept clean and ironed so that it’s always neat and presentable.
  • The flag must be replaced when damaged, which means that if it gets torn, faded or damaged, it must be replaced immediately.
  • Before raising the flag, make sure to inspect for any damage or to see if it is tangled.
  • Make sure to check the flag after bad weather, such as storms or harsh weather, to ensure that it remains in good condition.
  • Handle respectfully when the old flag gets worn out.
  • Ensure that you never insult and mishandle the flag. After all, lowering it in contempt, tearing or damaging it in any way is a criminal offence under Article 3 of Federal Decree Law No. 13 of 2019.
  • Finally, make sure to fold the flag properly after use. It should be neatly folded and stored in the flag box when it is not displayed.

These were just the etiquette related to flag handling. There are also rules for placement and those relating to flag and pole dimensions. Make sure to follow all of the guidelines and refer to the proper rules for hoisting the flag properly. Ensure that there is no disrespect to the national flag of the UAE.
