According to an article which was recently published by The Independent, the federal register received a proposed rule which recognises the medicinal uses of cannabis. It also acknowledges that it has a lesser scope for misuse and abuse.

This particular rule was approved by General Merrick Garland. To be clear, it does not legalise the use of marijuana just yet. All it will do is ask for cannabis to be reclassified from Schedule I drug to Schedule III drug.

Schedule I drugs are reserved for some of the most dangerous drugs like Heroin and LSD. Schedule III drugs are less dangerous like Ketamine and some forms of anabolic steroids.

As of now, the move has just been proposed. The Drug Enforcement Administration will now take public comment on the proposal. This comment period lasts for 60 days after which an administrative judge will review it.

Though it’s a lengthy process, it might make legalising the drug easier in the future. While many may still oppose its legalisation, citing it as a gateway drug. Others, however, state that since it is not a hard drug, it should be treated in the same way as alcohol is.

It is argued that once weed is legalised, it will allow the government to regulate it better and be more in control of it since it will have various checks and balances in place.
