India Ranks 2nd For Office Romances; 40% Of Indians Have Dated Coworkers, Says Survey

Romance can happen anywhere—school, college, weddings, or even the office. One of the most common spots is the workplace, where colleagues can fall in love amidst spreadsheets and deadlines. A recent survey revealed that office romances in India are even more common than in many other parts of the world. Keep reading to know more.

India’s Rank In Office Romance Survey

In a recent study, Ashley Madison, in partnership with YouGov, compared office romances across 11 countries. The results revealed that India ranks second in workplace romances. Participants were asked whether they had dated a colleague in the past or were currently dating one. According to the findings, 40% of Indian respondents said they have been involved in an office romance at some point. This trend isn’t limited to big cities—smaller towns like Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu are also showing high interest, reported The Free Press Journal.

The survey was conducted in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the US, with a total of 13,581 participants. Mexico topped the list for office romances with 43% positive responses. These figures are noticeably above those in countries like the US, UK, and Canada, where around 30% of people said the same. It’s surprising to see colleagues falling in love so often, even as companies introduce clearer rules and expectations around workplace behaviour.

51% Indian Men Admitted To Finding Love At Work

The study also highlights some interesting gender differences. Men in India are more likely to have dated a coworker. 51% of men say they have, compared to 36% of women. This suggests men may take more risks or feel more open about sharing such experiences. Women, on the other hand, tend to be more cautious about professional consequences.

Around 29% of women said they avoid office relationships because they worry it could affect their careers, while slightly fewer men (27%) felt the same. When it comes to personal consequences, men worry more: 30% of men said personal issues held them back, compared to 26% of women.

Age also plays a role in attitudes toward office relationships. Younger workers, especially those aged 18 to 24, are the most cautious, with 34% expressing concern about how a workplace romance might impact their career growth.
