Good news for trekkers! Uttarakhand has opened 83 Himalayan peaks across the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. This is an amazing opportunity for people who dream of mountaineering expeditions and trekking in the hills. The move is also expected to boost high-altitude tourism and generate jobs for locals. Here’s what we know so far.
83 Trekking Peaks Now Open In Uttarakhand
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the 83 peaks in Uttarakhand range from 5,700 metres to 7,756 metres in height. These include some of the most challenging summits in the Indian Himalayas, such as Kamet (7,756m), Nanda Devi East, the Chaukhamba group, Trishul group, Shivling, Satopanth, Changabang, Panchachuli, Neelkanth, and the Nilkanth group.
These mountain peaks are internationally known for their difficult terrain and climbing routes. Trekkers often consider them a dream destination for their scenic grandeur. These peaks are undoubtedly a vital part of the Himalayan landscape. The decision was taken under the directions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and implemented by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) in coordination with the Forest Department.

Move To Boost Adventure Tourism
According to Hindustan Times, opening the 83 peaks is being called a historic step for Uttarakhand’s adventure tourism sector. It will also create employment opportunities for locals and encourage India’s youth to explore fields like mountaineering.
One more important point: for these 83 notified peaks, Indian mountaineers will not have to pay expedition-related fees, including peak fees, camping charges, or environmental fees. Earlier, these were levied by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) and the Forest Department. Now, the state government will bear these costs, which will benefit young climbers.
Applications for expeditions on these peaks can be submitted through the Uttarakhand Mountaineering Permission System (UKMPS), a fully digital online portal. The process is easy, transparent, and straightforward! So, are you ready for an adventure?
