Kedarnath Dham Receives Season’s First Snowfall; Devotees Celebrate The Magical Himalayan View

The sacred Kedarnath Dham in Uttarakhand, one of Lord Shiva’s most important Jyotirlingas, has received its first snowfall of the season. A blanket of snow covered the temple, offering devotees a breathtaking glimpse of the Himalayas and the majestic shrine. Here’s more.

Kedarnath Temple Gets Its First Snowfall Of The Season

On October 6, the revered Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand received a fresh spell of snow, the first of this season! As per a report by The Times of India, the weather changed suddenly around 1:30-2 pm, and the snowfall began, leading to a sharp drop in temperature. This officially marked the beginning of winter in the region. The breathtaking visuals were also shared by the official X account of Uttarakhand Police.

Many pilgrims took to X and other social media platforms to share mesmerising videos and pictures. Those present at the temple during the snowfall couldn’t contain their excitement as the white flakes falling over the temple and the Himalayas created a magical sight. Situated at an altitude of 11,755 feet, Kedarnath usually experiences heavy rainfall and snow from October onwards.

Sacred Dham Opens for Six Months Each Year

The Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is open to devotees for about six months annually, from April to November. Thousands of pilgrims visit during this period before the temple closes for winter due to extreme weather conditions and heavy snow, which can make the yatra impossible. The first snowfall of the season has not only delighted devotees but also marked the official start of the colder months.

You would also like to know that Kedarnath isn’t the only place to experience its first snowfall this season. Just a few days ago, Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir also witnessed fresh snow, turning the valley into a winter wonderland once again. The snowfall has revived hopes for tourism in the region, which had slowed down after the April 2025 Pahalgam attack. Local businesses and hoteliers in J&K are now hopeful that the snow will draw visitors back to the region.
