If you’ve been to Varanasi or are even remotely aware of the culinary landscape of the city, then you must have heard about the iconic Pahalwan Lassi and Chachi Ki Kachori. These were the go-to places for a hearty breakfast in the city and unfortunately, they have now been removed from Varaansi’s Lanka trisection. But why? Scroll on to find out.

Varanasi’s Famous Pahalwan Lassi And Chachi Ki Kachori Demolished

According to The Times of India, the legendary Pahalwan Lassi, Chachi Ki Kachori and Mahendra’s Banarasi Paan Shop were among the 30 shops that were demolished in Varanasi on Tuesday evening. The shops were razed as part of a road widening project in the city.

To ease traffic congestion in Varanasi, a plan to construct a four-lane road in the area was proposed and approved. The Public Works Department (PWD) shared that multiple notices were issued to the shopkeepers of the 30 shops, including Pahalwan Lassi and Chachi Ki Kachori, to vacate the area in Varanasi.

More Details About The Road Widening Project

As per reports, a team of PWD demolished shops like Pahalwan Lassi and Chachi Ki Kachori in Varanasi’s Lanka to start converting the Vijaya crossing-Lanka-Bhikharipur-Lahartara Road into a four-lane road. According to PWD authorities, most of the work on the ₹215-crore project is already complete, and only a few patches in Lanka were pending. This will now be completed soon as the demolition was completed on Wednesday morning.

It is to be noted that the shopkeepers did not stage any protests as they were issued notices weeks ago. Many foodies in the city and on social media showed their displeasure after losing these iconic eateries in Varanasi.
