Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi has now installed a traditional ‘Vikramaditya Vedic Clock’ in its courtyard. The clock was installed with full rituals and devotion and started functioning from Brahma Muhurta recently. Here’s everything you need to know about this intriguing Vedic clock.

Gifted by Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav, this unique clock showcases India’s ancient time calculation system at Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi. According to The Times of India, the clock weighs 700 kg and blends tradition and technology beautifully. The Vikramaditya Vedic Clock at the temple divides the day into 30 ‘muhurtas’, each lasting 48 minutes. It also displays Local Mean Time, tithi, nakshatra, and more.

Reportedly, this ‘Vikramaditya Vedic Clock’ is touted as the world’s first clock designed to display time based on the traditional Vedic Panchang instead of the standard 24-hour Gregorian system. People visiting the sacred temple will now be able to understand India’s ancient time-keeping system.

How This Vedic Clock Works 

You would be surprised to know that this Vedic clock does not work like a usual clock. In this system, a day starts at sunrise, not midnight, and ends with the next sunrise. According to The Times of India, it also provides information on festivals, eclipses, moon phases, and astrological calculations. But yes, for reference, the Vikramaditya Vedic Clock at Kashi Vishwanath Temple also displays Indian Standard Time (IST) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

The clock was installed in the temple complex with full rituals, ceremonies, and devotion. Moreover, this initiative aims to revive the Indian system of time reckoning and help people reconnect with tradition and ancient Vedic knowledge. The clock really looks beautiful, in our opinion.
