Attending the launch of Viceroy’s Table in Dubai was an elegant experience that took me back in time to the historic British colonial era in India. The restaurant showcases indulgent Anglo-Indian cuisine, featuring a beautiful blend of Indian flavours using the finest British techniques. From flavourful coastal curries to the classic butter chicken, each dish painted a nostalgic picture of perfection. Here’s everything I tasted and all about the overall experience at the launch of this new place in Dubai.
Soup And Salad Inspired By Bengal’s Past
I began the meal with two beautifully nostalgic and comforting dishes that instantly set the tone. The Calcutta Club Tomato Soup was smooth and vibrant, reminiscent of a time when leisurely lunches unfolded under slow-turning fans in grand old clubs. Its comforting depth of flavour made it a fitting introduction. Paired with it was the Prawn and Coconut Salad, which was refreshing and delicately balanced, featuring juicy prawns, fresh coconut, and a bright hint of lime and ginger.
Timeless Starters With A Twist
Next came an innovative blend of starters that celebrated the richness of Indian culinary heritage with a refined, contemporary twist. If you love a good Indian chaat but with a fun, healthier twist, then you just cannot miss the Kale Chip Chaat. The Mushroom Galouti melted effortlessly, its delicacy a tribute to royal kitchens. The Chapli Kebab, bold and spiced, conjured the rugged tales of the North-West Frontier. Adding a nod to colonial indulgence, the Chicken Liver Pâté with Melba Toast offered silky richness paired with a crisp bite—an Edwardian-era favourite once served in planters’ clubs and hill station parties.
An Epic Main Course Of Nostalgia And Nuance
The main course arrived as a delicious passage through time and history, blending regional depth with colonial sophistication. The Prawn Moilee with Buttered Rice evoked Kerala’s serene backwaters, its gentle coconut curry both aromatic and nuanced. The Chicken à la Kiev followed with European grace, its golden crust concealing a rich, herb-infused butter centre. Champaran Mutton brought the bold essence of Bihar to the table, slow-cooked in sealed pots with garlic and spices, and was hearty and steeped in tradition. For a comforting interlude, the silky Maa Ki Daal simmered through the night, delivered warmth and familiarity, enriched with a generous swirl of ghee. The Kashmiri Dum Aloo brought balance with its delicate spices and creamy yoghurt base, while the Begum’s Butter Chicken offered a nostalgic finale—smoky, smooth, and endlessly satisfying.

Timeless Desserts And Sweet Memories
The desserts were as comforting and indulgent as the previous courses. The Caramel Custard was delicately smooth and golden, evoking memories of simple pleasures once shared in colonial clubs and boarding houses from Madras to Shillong. Paired with it, the Baby Gulab Jamun offered a luxurious take on a traditional favourite, soft, rose-scented dumplings nestled in creamy saffron rabri. These sweet finales struck the perfect balance between nostalgia and sophistication, rounding off the experience on a richly satisfying note.
Opulent Interiors Merging Tradition And Modernity
Viceroy’s Table’s interior shows the majestic side of North Indian palaces with the charm of South Indian mansions. Visitors are greeted by a mirrored entrance inspired by northern design, leading into a space rich with jade-green shades, polished dark wood, and luxurious patterned fabrics. The ground floor and bar showcase carefully selected elements that reflect old-world elegance. It contains actual hunting trophies from the Maharaja of Jodhpur, vintage collectables, and captivating artefacts such as Grandmother Sethi’s barometer. Each piece has been chosen to evoke memories of the past while maintaining a sleek, modern feel, offering a visually captivating environment for enthusiasts of history and tradition.
Chef Karishma Sakhrani’s Bold Fusion Of Flavours And Craftsmanship
MasterChef India finalist Karishma Sakhrani leads the kitchen with an adventurous menu that blends modern Indian flavours and seasonal British ingredients. Complementing the menu, experienced F&B professional Sameer Uttamsingh has designed a Club Cocktail programme that celebrates India’s rich botanical and spice legacy, with each cocktail offering a contemporary twist on classics infused with regional flavours.
Dining at Viceroy’s Table was more than just a culinary experience; it was a beautifully immersive journey through history, flavour, and design. The food truly paid homage to India’s history while embracing a modern identity.
