In a video now going viral on X, we can see how a train had a narrow escape on Monday when the retaining wall of a railway bridge on the Chakki river suddenly collapsed. The river is located near Dhangu in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The video was posted by X user, @iNikhilsaini, with a caption that read, “A major tragedy was narrowly avoided in Dhangu, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, as a train with hundreds of passengers onboard crossed the Chakki River bridge just moments before its foundation gave way due to heavy flooding.”

Bone-chilling visuals from the video have been shared on social media as the train crossed the bridge just moments before part of the structure gave way. As per a report by Hindustan Times, Nurpur Superintendent of Police (SP), Ashok Ratan, stated that the retaining wall collapsed due to excessive rainfall in the area. Authorities have now closed the adjoining Dhangu road and informed the railway authorities.

Bridge Collapse Sparks Safety Concerns

No injuries were reported, and the train crossed the bridge safely. However, the terrifying incident has sparked serious discussion around railway infrastructure and passenger safety. One user on X commented, “This Bridge has a history of destruction and corruption”. The comment highlighted the fact that the Chakki railway bridge had partially collapsed during the August 2022 floods. The incident also led to the suspension of all train services on this route, as per a report by The Times of India. 

While some users criticised the poor state of infrastructure, many others pointed to illegal mining as a major reason. Several claimed that ongoing mining activity has significantly weakened the riverbed and nearby structures. One user added, “Illegal mining risks lives—we must prevent disasters like this. Stronger regulations now!”

Whatever the reason, the frightening video of the train passing just before the collapse is nothing short of a miracle. If it had been just a few seconds late, a tragedy could have unfolded. It was undoubtedly a narrow escape.
