The Andhra Pradesh government has approved metro rail projects for Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, signalling a major upgrade in the state’s urban mobility infrastructure. These metro systems will reduce traffic congestion, boost connectivity, and support eco-friendly transit options for commuters in two of the state’s busiest cities.

Visakhapatnam Metro Project: Boosting Coastal City Connectivity

The Visakhapatnam Metro Rail Project will unfold in two phases. According to Times Property, Phase I will span 46.23 kilometres, covering three major corridors — Steel Plant Junction to Kommadi (34.40 km), Gurudwara to Old Post Office (5.08 km), and Thatichetlapalem to Chinna Waltair (6.75 km). Authorities will construct 42 stations under this phase and acquire 99.75 acres of land, with land acquisition costs estimated at ₹882 crore.

The second phase will extend the metro from Kommadi to Bhogapuram over 30.67 kilometres. Combined, both phases will cover a total of 76.90 kilometres, at an overall estimated cost of ₹14,309 crore. As reported by Urban Acres, the project aims to improve transport access in residential, commercial, and industrial zones of Visakhapatnam.

Vijayawada Metro Project: Enhancing Capital Region Transit

Vijayawada’s metro project has also secured state approval and will begin with two corridors in Phase I. As per Times Property, the first corridor will run from Gannavaram to Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS), covering 25.95 kilometres. The second corridor will stretch 12.45 kilometres from PNBS to Penamaluru. This phase will include 34 stations and involve land acquisition of 91 acres, costing around ₹1,152 crore.

In Phase II, a third corridor will connect PNBS to Amaravati’s Reservoir Station. This extension will link Vijayawada to the developing capital region, improving access and mobility across the Krishna River corridor.

Funding And Project Implementation

As reported by NewsMeter, both projects will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, aligning with India’s New Metro Rail Policy. The Central Government will contribute 40% of the funding, while private developers will invest the remaining 60%. The Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (APMRCL) will oversee execution, and French firm Systra Consultants has been tasked with preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to guide construction.
