Visakhapatnam has long been in desperate need of a metro network, as per the locals. However, the project has encountered delays and obstacles. Recently, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development or MAUD minister has said that the work on the project can only begin if the centre assents to it. From the cost of its construction to the number of corridors it has, here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about the Visakhapatnam metro project.

According to an article which was recently published by The New Indian Express or the TNIE, Visakhapatnam metro cannot begin work until the Centre gives a nod. This is as per  P Narayana, who is the MAUD minister, who said that the government of Andhra Pradesh cannot begin work on the project until that happens.

This was said on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, during the question hour at the State Legislative Assembly. The project is estimated to cost a whopping ₹17,323 crore. The Vizag metro is slated to stretch across a whopping 76.9 kilometres. As many as four corridors have been proposed in Vizag.

These four corridors are Steel Plant Junction-Kommadi which will stretch across 34.4 kilometres, Gurudwara Jn-RTC Complex-Old Post Office, which is 5.10 kilometres, Tadichetlapalem-Vizag Rly Stn-Chinna Waltair, which is 6.7 kilometres, and Kommadi-Bhogapuram Airport which is 20.67 kilometre.

What Delays And Obstacles Is The Project Facing?

Narayana also went on to state that the Comprehensive Mobility Plan or the CMP as well as the feasibility report for the Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam metro had already been completed. The Detailed Project Report or the DPR was also assigned to a Gurgaon company, VMTC.

If reports are to go by, the CMP is available with the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation or GVMC. The metro project is highly anticipated by the locals.
