Welcome to Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai – the world’s biggest open air laundry.
What Is It?
Ever heard of a human powered washing machine? Then look no further than Dhobi Ghat! Based in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai, this 140 year old landmark was built in the British Raj to cater to Mumbai’s hotels & hospitals. Today, the laundries collect clothes from Colaba to Virar and send it to Dhobi Ghat daily.
Dhobi Ghat is a 15-acre sprawl and filled with narrow soapy lanes and washed clothes hanging everywhere. Fortunately, a lot of manual work has now been replaced with machines. It’s not just a work place, but nearly 400 dhobis reside here. They clean, wash, iron and serve many clients here.
