Watch: Toronto Cab Driver Tells Passenger If She Was In Pakistan, She Would’ve Been Kidnapped

In an alarming incident, a piece of conversation recently went viral on social media. The video showed a Toronto cab driver – purportedly Pakistani – saying to a passenger that if this were Pakistan, he would have kidnapped her. This piece of conversation saw a lot of heated comments and was a recipient of xenophobic and Islamophobic comments. Many people presented an alternate understanding of the situation shedding further light on the misunderstood context of the conversation.

Toronto Cab Driver Recorded Saying Alarming Thing On Cam

Someone recently shared an alarming video on X (formerly known as Twitter) which showed an Uber driver saying worrisome things to his passenger. In the video, he says that if this was Pakistan, she would’ve been kidnapped.

Understandably, this incites a worried response from the passenger. The cab driver goes on to state that there would be no other option to “get her.” The conversation seems to be shared in bits and pieces, and even from the editing of the video, it is seen that parts of the conversation are missing.

However, this evidence of missing context did not deter the Internet from passing judgements. Many people were very quick to pass racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic comments. Many even called for the suspension and deportation of the driver in the video.

An Alternate Understanding Of The Conversation Recorded

An important question needs to be asked here. Is that what the person is saying? The video is certainly alarming and a thorough investigation should be launched. If it is found that the driver is indeed saying what is presented in the video, the strictest actions should be taken.

However, many people pointed out an alternate interpretation of the comments. Many said that it is possible that he is simply talking about how unsafe women are in Pakistan. It is not that he intends to kidnap the passenger but is just pointing out that if this was Pakistan, it wouldn’t be safe for women.

The fact that he says this in the first person could be because of his inadequate English-speaking skills. This is further evidenced by the fact that the passenger is heard laughing in the video. She even thanked the driver before leaving the cab – two things unlikely to happen if the driver was threatening to kidnap her.
